First published in 1859, Nelson Lee's Three Years Among the Comanches is perhaps the most widely known story of all Indian captivity narratives. Lee was a Texan Ranger captured by marauding Indians in the 1850s and forced to live with them as a slave for three years before making his escape. His account includes detailed descriptions of life in a nomadic Comanche village, his marriage to a young squaw, buffalo hunts, Comanche versus Apache conflicts, Comanche mythology and gut-wrenching descriptions of the terrible fates of his fellow-captives who were tortured before him, his life being spared only because of a silver alarm clock he possessed, the loud workings of which mystified his superstitious captors.

Three Years Among the Comanches Nelson Lee 9781365707018 Books Reviews
The book was very enjoyable however it was long and drawn out I know this had to be done to make the story as accurate as possible. Having read other books from this era I have noted there were some differences of opinion as to what Indians did with their captives.
According to the Texas State Historical Society places this work "firmly in the realm of literary hoax ." This story strains credulity from beginning to end. Do not waste your time .
Read the book and thought to myself through out that this guy has done everything. Once I finished the book I did what I normally do and googled his name. Turns out its a complete hoax. Narrated by him but ghost written by NY publishers. Its a fine example of 19th century pulp fiction. And as such still a good read.
The book was interesting enough, but most of the book was about the life before the Comanches. I would have preferred to have more information about his life with the Indians rather than a long account of his life before his Indian experiences.
Although you have to read through 10 chapters before you get to his life among the Comanches , you will not be disappointed. His life among the Comanches follows what I have read about this "tribe". It is a shame the original Americans have been treated the way they have, I believe that over time they would have joined us (the white eyes) and made this a better place.
Mr. Lee wrote his memoirs soon after he escaped captivity, in order to call attention to the dismal fate of other captives, particularly white women. He led a very adventurous life before his time with the Comanche, and I found his narrative interesting in the extreme. Texas Rangers hold a special place in the hearts of all Texans, and the author's accounts of the Republic are fascinating. Written well, but with quite a few typos (no doubt due to the scanning of the original), this is a very readable narration of a life in the West. Quite a lot of violence (including torture), no sex, no foul language.
Nelson Lee's life story is long and detailed from leaving home as a teen seeking adventure, going to sea, fighting wars, being a Texas ranger, etc.,to being captive among Comanches. His prose is that of the times-- laborious to read structures, flowery language for the sake of appearance, faulty attempts at humor, allusions for their own sake, filler description, and very little actual observation for a three-year captivity. One certainly could learn much of the language by merely attending to your captors' intercourse. Frankly, this tale reads like a tall tale told by a reader of others' experiences rather than one's own. It also smacks of propaganda by those inclined in government to exterminate the filthy savages. In short, it is Jacksonian in tone. I, for one, would have doubted its authenticity had I been a contemporary. You be the judge.
